It feels fitting that in an Olympic year we got our first gold! And whilst our achievement doesn’t speak to our athletic prowess (maybe quite the opposite!), it does recognise our commitment to the Casa de Olivos sustainable journey.

Since 2023, Casa de Olivos has been offering sustainability-certified tourist apartments to guests in the beautiful Baix Maestrat, where they can disconnect and re-charge with a clear conscience. 

And now we are certified to the Gold standard by Green Tourism.

People, places, planet

The achievement of the Green Tourism Gold award is not the only thing we have gained from our work towards sustainability. The links we have made with local businesses have cemented our relationship with the community at large. We are familiar faces, warmly greeted letting us know that we are making great progress towards acceptance from our adoptive town, Traiguera. 

Guests are increasingly asking us about our work here. This is often their first taste of living fully off-grid, although many have no idea that we are. Ever-more guided tours of the finca describe to interested travellers what we have done, and what our plans are. 

And when we talk with such sincerity about our local town and neighbourhood, guests are reassured and encouraged to explore for themselves, and find the same welcome that we have.

Casa de Olivos is the perfect place to come and disconnect from the stresses of the everyday. We take guest wellness seriously and have set up the guest spaces with lots of details to make everyone feel right at home. The combination of nature, tranquillity, lots of open space to explore, yoga mats, and privacy make every experience here restorative and soothing.

Our position on a hillside in the Castellon countryside connects us deeply to the natural environment. We see the changing of the seasons and how the weather affects flora and fauna, while the farmers tend to their olive and almond crops. We have a vantage point to see how much the climate is changing and what that means to all that surrounds us. 

So we are particularly pleased to be offering carbon negative guest accommodation in 2024, meaning that our already low emissions are now more than offset by tree planting projects both here, and further afield through Tree Nation.

Spread the word – Behavioural Contagion

We know that the climate-positive contribution made by Casa de Olivos is not enough to make the climate difference so-needed globally. But we are eager and proud to do our bit. 

Casa de Olivos consistently provides guests with a great experience, demonstrating that eco-friendly off-grid accommodation doesn’t mean a sacrifice of creature comfort.  We show how our path towards sustainability enhances our life here. It is an enriching journey in its own right, and one that also delivers benefits to people, place, and planet.

If we can inspire others to take their own steps towards sustainability, then we magnify our contribution. And if those we directly inspire also go on to inspire others, then maybe the lasting change we all seek might become a little closer at hand.

Our sustainable journey doesn’t finish with gold. We have more to do. But gold is a good place to continue from.
